What is DElEd?
DElEd (D.El.Ed) is a 2-year full-time diploma course to train teachers for primary level teaching, ie, from class I to VIII. DElEd stands for Diploma course in Elementary Education and covers the teaching methods of children between the ages of 6 to 14.
The 2-year D.El.Ed syllabus is divided into 4 semesters and has been designed to enhance the educational qualities techniques and new teaching methods. The AISHE (All India Survey on Higher Education) portal states that out of 7.2% of students enrolled at the Diploma level in India, the majority of students are enrolled in Teacher Training Courses.

The D.El.Ed qualification has been made mandatory for primary teachers after the passage of the “Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill, 2017”. Note: Prakash Javadekar, Ex Union Minister for Human Resources Development warned that untrained teachers working at Govt. schools are likely to lose their jobs unless they successfully complete the D.El.Ed course.
The qualification for D.El.Ed admission is that the aspirants ought to have fundamental merit of 10+2 or equal passed with 50% marks from a recognized board. In-service teachers are required to acquire a D.El.Ed qualification within a period of 5 years.

The number of untrained in-service teachers in India is so large that it is difficult to train them through the regular formal system. To deal with the situation, NIOS D.El.Ed Training Program was developed by the Academic Department of NIOS on the initiative of MHRD, Government of India.
The course structure was designed by following the NCF 2005 (National Curriculum Framework), NCFTE 2010 (National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education), and RTE 2009 (Right to Education) act.

DELED Eligibility
There are some basic requirements to enroll in the D.El.Ed course. The eligibility is more or less the same for all the states. However few states may have specific requirements that vary. The candidates must check the details before applying for admission in the D.El.Ed course.
The general requirements are stated below:
- The lower age limit to apply for the D.El.Ed courses usually range between 17 to 18 years whereas the upper age limit can range from 34 to 35 years.
- Candidates should have cleared 10+2 from a recognized board of education with 50% or higher marks (applicable only for general category students).
- Applicants from the reserved categories such as the SC, ST, and OBC are given 5% relaxation in the Higher Secondary Examination marks. In such cases, candidates are supposed to produce their reservation certificates along with the other required documents.
- The Higher Secondary Examination marks will only be considered even if the applicant is a graduate.
- Some states and institutes conduct their own entrance examinations, hence aspirants must clear such exams for D.El.Ed admission.
Untrained teachers who are already working at government primary or upper primary schools can also apply for the D.El.Ed course.
DElEd Admission Process
The D.El.Ed admission process is held annually by the respective states which have their own baords and organizations for this purpose. Notifications are released on the official websites by the concerned departments.
States like Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Assam conduct entrance exams for D.El.Ed admissions, whereas some other states West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, do not conduct entrance exams for D.El.Ed admissions.
- Entrance Based Admission: D.El.Ed entrance exam syllabus includes subjects studied at school. It is an objective type written exam with multiple choice answers. The syllabus includes basic subjects like Mathematics and Numerical Ability, General Knowledge, English, Teaching Abilities, Language Test (Hindi or regional language)

NIOS DElEd
NIOS D.El.Ed program is specifically designed for the in-service untrained teachers who are working in the primary schools of different states throughout the country. The program has been developed by the Academic Department, NIOS on the initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, keeping in view the NCF 2005 (National Curriculum Framework), RTE 2009 (Right to Education) and NCFTE 2010 (National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education) act.
NIOS D.El.Ed program aims at enabling the enrolled students to develop in their skills and understanding to make teaching and learning more effective.
The NIOS D.El.Ed course fee structure laid out by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, for the 2 years course is :
- Total Fees is INR 12,000 (i.e. Rs.6000/- per year).
- 1st year Course Fee:- Rs.4,500/- (Rs.1500/- exempted for the DISH TV Set-top box to watch the video lectures on SWAYAMPRABHA DTH Channel no. 32)
- 2nd year Course Fee:- Rs.6,000/-
- candidates may deposit the fees through online mode only via using Credit Card, Debit Card, Net Banking services.
According to Hindustan Times, over 12 lakh untrained teachers across the country are taking the examination for two years D.El.Ed course through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) in pursuance of Prime Minister’s Digital India campaign.
NIOS DElEd Admission
The eligibility criteria for NIOS D.El.Ed is similar to that of the requirements of the regular D.El.Ed course. The only difference being that the degree would be considered valid only for the in-service primary teachers. The NIOS D.El.Ed admission is done through online application and after successfully clearing the entrance exams.
The admission procedure for the NIOS D.El.Ed course is stated below:
- Visit the official website
- Click on the apply link and make online registration.
- The applicant needs to mention all the personal details such as name, parent’s name, address, gender, date of birth, etc in the application form.
- Upload the scanned photograph, signature, and the other required documents mentioned on the online application form.
- Click on the register button, after which the registration number and login details will be sent to the registered email id.
- Pay the application fees, ie. INR 250 either online or through offline mode.
- Download the NIOS D.El.Ed application form for future reference.
The candidates can download their NIOS D.El.Ed Hall Ticket/Admit Card a week before the exam from the official NIOS Portal. The students can access the portal and get the required information about the NIOS D.El.Ed Results, Merit List, Cut Off Marks by using their Admit Card Number and Password.
DELED NIOS Eligibility
The qualification criteria for National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) is given below:
- The applicant who is going to apply for NIOS D.El.Ed 2021 admission must have possessed stated qualification from a well-recognized institute or university with good academic records
- The applicant must be a citizen of India.
- Untrained Teachers working at Upper Primary level from class 5th to 9th must-have B.A./B. Sc. Qualification. Respective State sponsorship is mandatory.
- Teachers who are untrained and are working at a Primary level from class 1st to 4th must-have Secondary Qualification or its equivalent from CBSE or any other recognized board of India with at least 50% marks in aggregate. There is 5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PH candidates.

Ans. If a teacher is a plain Graduate, then, he/she is required to acquire a professional qualification, ie, D.El.Ed, for teaching at the elementary level (Class 6th to 8th). The NIOS offers an 18 months D.El.Ed program through open distance learning.
